Code .ORG

Notification for the collection and disclosure of personal information

Dear Parent/Guardian/Independent Student,

Every year, at the beginning of the year, we notify you of the online applications we use as a division. In addition, this year, your child's teacher or school wants to use Code .ORG.

What is Code .ORG?
Code.org helps solve a clear problem: many students don’t get the chance to learn computer science in school. It provides a free, high‑quality, flexible curriculum that teaches core computer science through engaging activities, and lets students build real things like websites, apps, animations, games, and physical computing systems—learning experiences you can’t create with pen and paper alone. Designed to work for different learning styles and pacing, Code.org brings computer science to more classrooms and expands participation, including among students who are traditionally underrepresented.

🔒 How Personal Information is Protected

Based on available documentation, here's what we know about data protection for Code .ORG:

Security Measures

Partial
The vendor collects academic performance, identifiable photos, and optional race or ethnicity data. The vendor states personal information is encrypted at rest and staff receive security training. However, ISO or SOC certifications and encryption in transit are not stated. Based on this, the safeguards appear basic for the sensitivity described.

Data Sharing Practices

Partial
The vendor states it does not sell personal information or allow advertising. However, documentation indicates sharing with third-party analytics, such as Google Analytics, without full details.

Policy Completeness

Partial
The documentation does not state encryption in transit or independent security certifications. A public list of other companies used for processing is not provided. It is unclear how long student data is kept before deletion. Documentation indicates data may be stored outside Canada, which means different privacy laws may apply.

Parent & Student Rights

Partial
In the Alberta context, the vendor's policy states a process to correct personal information. The documentation does not state a clear method for parents to access a copy of student data. It states deletion occurs when the school requests it, but does not state how long data is kept.

This assessment is based on the vendor's stated documentation. The school division continues to evaluate these practices.
