Notification for the collection and disclosure of personal information

Dear Parent/Guardian/Independent Student,

Every year, at the beginning of the year, we notify you of the online applications we use as a division. In addition, this year, your child's teacher or school wants to use Matific.

What is Matific?
Matific helps solve a common math problem: students memorizing procedures without truly understanding and feeling anxious or disengaged. It turns math into interactive, gamified activities grounded in strong pedagogy that guide learners from concrete to abstract ideas, building deep conceptual understanding, critical thinking, and problem‑solving. The program adapts to each student’s performance to provide personalized practice and real‑time feedback, while teachers gain insights and fun class games to introduce, review, reinforce, and assess topics. Independent studies show Matific improves learning outcomes and motivation, making math more engaging and effective than traditional pen‑and‑paper practice.

🔒 How Personal Information is Protected

Based on available documentation, here's what we know about data protection for Matific:

Security Measures

Gaps
The vendor states it collects student performance data, including progress and achievement. This is moderately sensitive student information. The security pages mention annual audits but do not state encryption in transit or at rest, and no ISO or SOC certifications are listed. Based on the documentation, the stated safeguards do not appear proportional to the sensitivity of the data.

Data Sharing Practices

Partial
The vendor states it does not sell personal information and shares data with service providers. However, documentation indicates sharing with analytics partners and use of a CRM for marketing, without naming specific companies or clearly explaining purposes.

Policy Completeness

Good
The documentation does not state whether data is encrypted in transit or at rest. Incident response and breach notification processes are not explained. A public sub-processor list and policy version or effective dates are not provided. Documentation indicates data may be stored outside Canada, which means different privacy laws may apply.

Parent & Student Rights

Good
In the Alberta context, the documentation does not state a clear method for parents to access a child’s information or request corrections. The policy states data is deleted when it is no longer needed, which addresses retention and deletion duties. Clear timelines and request workflows are not described.

This assessment is based on the vendor's stated documentation. The school division continues to evaluate these practices.
