Notification for the collection and disclosure of personal information

Dear Parent/Guardian/Independent Student,

Every year, at the beginning of the year, we notify you of the online applications we use as a division. In addition, this year, your child's teacher or school wants to use SplashLearn.

What is SplashLearn?
SplashLearn is a game‑based, curriculum‑aligned program that solves a common classroom problem: practice that isn’t engaging or tailored to each student’s level. It uses fun learning games and rewards to keep students motivated, while a structured, personalized learning path provides tailored instruction and real‑time progress tracking. Unlike pen‑and‑paper worksheets, SplashLearn adapts practice to each learner, sets personalized goals and reminders, and gives clear reports so teachers and parents can see progress and adjust support. With thousands of activities and ESSA‑validated design, it helps students build strong math and English skills, work independently, and do better on standards‑based assessments—all while enjoying learning.

🔒 How Personal Information is Protected

Based on available documentation, here's what we know about data protection for SplashLearn:

Security Measures

Partial
The most sensitive data appears to be student academic performance, unstructured student work, and recorded class audio or video. The vendor states encryption at rest using AES-256 and encryption in transit, and mentions penetration testing. The policy does not state SOC 2 or ISO certifications, or incident response, disaster recovery, or business continuity plans. These protections appear basic to moderate for this level of student data.

Data Sharing Practices

Partial
The vendor states it does not sell student information or use Student Data for targeted advertising. However, documentation mentions third-party analytics and marketing for adults, without listing all partners or purposes. This creates some uncertainty about broader data sharing.

Policy Completeness

Partial
The documentation explains encryption at rest and in transit and promises prompt breach notification. It does not state a policy date, a public subprocessor list, or an incident response plan. Disaster recovery, business continuity, staff security training, continuous monitoring, and breach history are also not detailed. Documentation indicates data may be stored in the United States, so different privacy laws may apply.

Parent & Student Rights

Gaps
In the Alberta context, the vendor's policy states a method for parents to access personal information. It also states a process to correct data. The policy explains how long information is kept and that accounts are deleted or de-identified after inactivity.

This assessment is based on the vendor's stated documentation. The school division continues to evaluate these practices.
