XtraMath

Notification for the collection and disclosure of personal information

Dear Parent/Guardian/Independent Student,

Every year, at the beginning of the year, we notify you of the online applications we use as a division. In addition, this year, your child's teacher or school wants to use XtraMath.

What is XtraMath?
XtraMath is a supplemental program that helps students quickly and accurately recall basic arithmetic facts, a common hurdle that slows problem solving and leads many learners to rely on finger counting. It uses adaptive spaced repetition—like smart flashcards—to focus practice on the specific facts each student needs based on their strengths and weaknesses, with short daily sessions and clear mastery goals. Unlike pen-and-paper drills, XtraMath adjusts in real time, tracks progress, provides informal assessments and reporting, and motivates students with awards and certificates. By strengthening fluency, it builds a solid foundation for future math, increases confidence, and helps reduce math anxiety; strategies should be taught first, and XtraMath provides efficient, individualized practice afterward.

🔒 How Personal Information is Protected

Based on available documentation, here's what we know about data protection for XtraMath:

Security Measures

Partial
The vendor states it collects student academic performance data and parent email addresses. The security section states encryption in transit and an incident response plan, which are helpful. However, the vendor does not state encryption at rest or certifications like ISO 27001 or SOC 2. Based on available documentation, protections appear basic for the sensitivity of the data.

Data Sharing Practices

Partial
The vendor states it does not sell personal data to third-party advertising. However, the documentation indicates internal analytics and AI/model improvement using user data, and it does not clearly list analytics partners or explain these secondary uses in detail.

Policy Completeness

Partial
The documentation describes data types, sub-processors, and encryption in transit. It does not state encryption at rest, SOC 2 or ISO certifications, or a breach notification timeframe. Policy versioning and detailed retention schedules are also not explained. Documentation indicates data is stored in the United States, which means different privacy laws may apply.

Parent & Student Rights

Partial
In the Alberta context, the vendor’s policy states a method to request access to personal information via a privacy email address. The documentation does not state a clear process for correcting data. It states deletion happens upon request after account termination, but it does not explain a defined retention period for student data.

This assessment is based on the vendor's stated documentation. The school division continues to evaluate these practices.
