Gimkit

Notification for the collection and disclosure of personal information

Dear Parent/Guardian/Independent Student,

Every year, at the beginning of the year, we notify you of the online applications we use as a division. In addition, this year, your child's teacher or school wants to use Gimkit.

What is Gimkit?
Gimkit is designed to solve a common classroom challenge: keeping students engaged while they practice and master content. Students answer questions on their own devices at their own pace, and see the same questions multiple times to reinforce learning and ensure mastery. Game elements—earning in‑game money and choosing upgrades and powerups—make review feel like play, motivating students in ways traditional pen‑and‑paper drills often can’t. KitCollab lets students write the questions themselves, turning practice into an active, creative experience that deepens understanding. Teachers can host live games or assign asynchronous practice, giving students repeated, memorable learning experiences that are both fun and effective.

🔒 How Personal Information is Protected

Based on available documentation, here's what we know about data protection for Gimkit:

Security Measures

Partial
The vendor states the service collects student performance data and identifiable student work. The policy states data protection technology (encryption) in transit and at rest, and vulnerability testing. However, certifications like SOC 2 or ISO 27001 are not stated. These protections appear basic for this data, leaving some uncertainty.

Data Sharing Practices

Good
The vendor states it does not sell personal information or use advertising. Documentation lists third-party analytics providers, like Google Analytics, for service improvement.

Policy Completeness

Partial
The documentation states data storage in the United States and lists third-party providers. It does not state a policy version date or breach notification timeframe. Certifications, staff security training, and business continuity or disaster recovery plans are not detailed. Documentation indicates data may be stored outside Canada, which means different privacy laws may apply.

Parent & Student Rights

Gaps
In the Alberta context, the vendor's policy states methods for parents to access data. It also states a process to correct data. Documentation describes retention and deletion timelines, which appear to address required deletion duties.

This assessment is based on the vendor's stated documentation. The school division continues to evaluate these practices.
