Kahoot!

Notification for the collection and disclosure of personal information

Dear Parent/Guardian/Independent Student,

Every year, at the beginning of the year, we notify you of the online applications we use as a division. In addition, this year, your child's teacher or school wants to use Kahoot!.

What is Kahoot!?
Kahoot! is designed to solve the common classroom challenge of low engagement and slow feedback by turning lessons and check-ins into interactive games students enjoy. Research and product materials state that Kahoot! increases motivation, reduces anxiety, and improves learning performance through game-based play. Teachers can use many question types, add slides and videos, and host sessions in class or remotely so everyone can participate. Students receive instant feedback, while teachers get detailed reports and insights to spot learning gaps and tailor instruction—supporting both formative and summative assessment. These real-time, gamified experiences and data go beyond pen and paper by making learning active, inclusive, and informed by immediate results.

🔒 How Personal Information is Protected

Based on available documentation, here's what we know about data protection for Kahoot!:

Security Measures

Partial
The documentation indicates collection of student email addresses, device identifiers, and identifiable photos. The vendor states it holds ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type II. However, encryption at rest and in transit are not clearly stated. The protections appear strong overall, but these gaps create uncertainty for this level of data.

Data Sharing Practices

Partial
The vendor states it does not sell student information or use it for advertising. However, documentation mentions sharing anonymized, aggregated data with other companies for analytics without naming them or explaining purposes in detail.

Policy Completeness

Good
The documentation does not state encryption at rest or in transit. It also does not explain how long data is kept or the deletion process. Breach notification timeframes and a public list of subprocessors are not stated. Documentation indicates data may be stored outside Canada, which means different privacy laws may apply.

Parent & Student Rights

Partial
In the Alberta context, the vendor’s policy states a method for parents to request access to student information and to request corrections. However, the documentation does not state how long data is kept or what happens when it is no longer needed. This leaves the legal duty to delete data through a retention schedule unclear.

This assessment is based on the vendor's stated documentation. The school division continues to evaluate these practices.
