Learning A-Z

Notification for the collection and disclosure of personal information

Dear Parent/Guardian/Independent Student,

Every year, at the beginning of the year, we notify you of the online applications we use as a division. In addition, this year, your child's teacher or school wants to use Learning A-Z.

What is Learning A-Z?
Learning A-Z addresses the challenge of providing high-quality, standards-aligned reading instruction and practice for diverse learners by combining teacher-led lessons with online resources. Its research-based PreK–6 programs blend technology with instruction to make teaching more effective, practice more personalized, and learning more informed. Programs like Raz-Plus offer over 50,000 standards-aligned resources—diverse texts, interactive lessons, and assessments—that integrate with core instruction, helping teachers equitably engage all students and deliver targeted, effective literacy instruction without the stress of searching. For English learners, materials build speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar, and academic vocabulary through reading and listening across many genres, discussing readings, and answering questions. Compared with pen-and-paper alone, this digital library and interactive activities make it easier to personalize practice and support comprehension, inspiring curiosity and the joy of learning.

🔒 How Personal Information is Protected

Based on available documentation, here's what we know about data protection for Learning A-Z:

Security Measures

Gaps
The vendor states it collects sensitive student data, including academic performance, voice recordings, and precise GPS location. The vendor also states certain applications are ISO 27001 certified, which is positive. However, encryption in transit and at rest are not stated, and SOC 2 is not mentioned. Based on documentation, protections appear only partly proportional to the sensitivity described.

Data Sharing Practices

Partial
The vendor states student data is used to deliver services and that marketing to students is limited. However, documentation indicates sharing data with analytics companies like Google Analytics and mentions advertising uses on non-student sites. The scope of sharing and specific partners for educational deployments are not fully explained.

Policy Completeness

Good
The documentation does not state encryption in transit or at rest. It does not explain breach notification steps, incident response, or monitoring. A privacy contact email and a complete subprocessor list are not provided. Documentation indicates data may be stored outside Canada, which means different privacy laws may apply.

Parent & Student Rights

Partial
In the Alberta context, the vendor’s policy appears to allow parents to correct information. The documentation also states a time-based deletion approach after inactivity. However, it does not state a clear method to produce all data for an access request. This leaves one key Alberta right unclear.

This assessment is based on the vendor's stated documentation. The school division continues to evaluate these practices.
