Background
Continuous improvement is expected of all schools. Planning and reporting processes at the school level are essential for focusing efforts to improve the quality of education provided to students. Under the Assurance model, meaningful and ongoing engagement with school community stakeholders is key to developing and advancing community understanding of the School Education Plan, Annual Results Report, and the daily work supporting the plan.
Procedures
- Education plans and results reports must align with the Division's Assurance Framework Policy 101, and with the requirements of Alberta Education's Assurance Framework as outlined in the annual Funding Manual.
- School Education Plans must align with the key areas of action and outcomes of the Division's Strategic Plan.
- School Education Plans and Annual Education Results Reports (AERR) will be part of a continuous improvement cycle including four key components:
- Explore: Involves accessing, analyzing and interpreting accurate and relevant data and, identifying and understanding an issue, concern or problem. Key question: What is going on here?
- Develop: Involves identification of a problem or challenge that can be addressed; identification of potentially successful strategies to address learner-centered problem/challenge; and developing an action plan. Key question: What needs to be improved? How?
- Take action: Involves learning as you implement the plan and making adjustments through formative feedback. Key question: How are we 'actioning' the plan?
- Evaluate: Involves evaluating the impact of the plan. Key question: Did our planned strategies have the desired outcomes? Why? What next?
- School administration and teachers will analyze Provincial Achievement Tests (PAT) and Diploma Exam results as part of their assurance processes and education results reporting.
- Analysis of data will involve:
- Multi-year trends
- Reporting Categories
- Test item analysis
- Participation rates
- Demographic and program results including gender, ESL/EAL, K & E, and inclusive/special education.
- School analysis documents will be retained by the principal for a minimum of two school years following the date of the analysis.
- Results of these analysis will inform action plans to improve student learning and will be reflected in schools' Three Year Education Plans.
- Analysis of data will involve:
- Principals will provide regular updates on the continuous improvement cycle at School Council meetings.
- School Education Plans, results report and budgets must be prepared by the Principal, in consultation with staff, School Council, and, where appropriate, students. The School Education Plan and Annual Results Report must be posted on the school's website.
- The School Education Plan will be submitted to the Superintendent, or designate, by May 31st each school year.
- The School Annual Education Report is to be submitted to the Superintendent, or designate, by November 30th each school year.
- Each principal will be required to present the School Education Plan and Annual Results Report to the Board of Trustees on a rotational basis.
- The Superintendent will implement processes to review the progress of the plans through annual instructional leadership meetings. At minimum, this process will include regular reviews of the following:
- Instructional Leadership for Exemplary Teaching Plan (ILET Plan);
- School Education Plan;
- Professional Learning Plan;
- and Annual Results Report.
