Background and Purpose
School websites and social media (ex. Facebook) represent an opportunity for a school to make a positive first impression and build on that good first impression by creating and maintaining communications that are, at the minimum, current and reliable places to learn about the school. Schools are encouraged to move beyond using their websites and social media platforms as static sources of information and use them to encourage parent, community and educator interaction and engagement with the school.
Procedures
- The school administration is responsible to ensure that material on the school website and social media is appropriate, as well as material on sites that are linked to the website. Policy 280 should be consulted to determine what personal information can be posted on the website and any permissions that may be required to obtain.
- The principal or designate is responsible to ensure that the website and social media are updated; information on the school website must be timely and accurate. Dated material must be removed or archived.
- The principal or designate shall ensure that the website and social media contains clear contact information for the school, and that messages to the school receive a response.
- Copyright consent is required when original work is displayed on a web site.
- The website and/or social media will be a source for information including, but not limited to:
- Access to the school's printed handbook that will contain:
- Grasslands and school Mission and Vision
- School Contact Information
- School Calendar
- School Bell Schedule
- School Attendance Procedures
- Reporting Periods / Assessment Procedures
- Student and Bussing Drop-off and Pick-up Expectations
- Student Conduct Expectations
- Dispute Resolution
- Fair Notice Statement
- Volunteer Procedures
- Student Support Services
- Dispensing of Medication
- Graduation information for school that include high school students
- More detailed information too lengthy to include in the printed handbook.
- Current staff directory
- Calendar of upcoming events.
- Links to often-used parent forms.
- Instructions for on-line payments of fees.
- Access to the school's printed handbook that will contain:
- The website and social media can encourage parent and community engagement with the school by displaying current information about:
- School Programs
- School Extracurricular Offerings
- School Events
- Student Activities
- Student Successes
- Student Support Services
- Assignments and Homework
- Student Work
- School community partnerships
- The school website and social media can also be used to encourage interaction with parents, the community and educators in other schools or jurisdictions by providing:
- A forum for teachers, administrators, students, and parents to exchange information and ideas
- Links to teacher webpages
- Links to organizations or websites outside the school that support the school's academic program
- Invitations to use tools available through platforms such as Google and PowerSchool
