AP-525 — Student Conduct on Buses

Section Five: Support Services
Effective Date: October 11, 2016 Last Reviewed: March 9, 2020

GUIDELINES

In order to ensure the comfort and safety of those using school buses, student conduct on buses must be exemplary.

PROCEDURES

  1. The driver is in full charge of the bus at all times, and students must obey instructions or directives promptly.

  2. Students are to be at the road at their designated stop prior to arrival of the bus.

  3. The driver may assign the seat which the student will occupy.

  4. Unnecessary conversation with the driver is prohibited.

  5. Conduct which may divert the driver's attention, thus endangering the safe operation of the bus, is prohibited.

  6. The use of tobacco, vapes, e-cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, or abusive language on school buses is prohibited.

  7. The consumption of food is at the discretion of the driver. However, students must not throw paper or other garbage on the floor of the bus, or out of the window.

  8. Students shall not extend any parts of their bodies out of the window.

  9. Students must stand well back, until the bus has come to a complete stop, before loading. Students must not attempt to get on or off the bus while it is in motion.

  10. When getting on or off the bus, students must obey the directions of the driver and always pass in front of the bus.

  11. Except in exceptional circumstances, students shall not leave their seats while the bus is in motion.

  12. Students shall not bring objects onto the bus which may cause injury to themselves, or other passengers, or damage the vehicle in any way. Skates may be transported but must have guards on the blades or be in a zippered tote bag.

  13. Students shall not be allowed to get on or off the bus route between their home and the school unless authorized by the principal or written authorization is received from the parent.

  14. Students/parents must try to inform the driver when absence is expected from riding the bus.

  15. Parents shall make certain that students are properly dressed during inclement weather. If, in the Bus Driver's opinion, a student is improperly dressed during inclement weather, the bus driver will discourage the student from riding the bus but will not refuse entry onto the bus.

  16. Students must respect the vehicle. Restitution for wilful damage shall be made by the passenger(s) and/or parents/guardians.

  17. Grasslands School Division provides its bus drivers with booklets of Bus Misconduct Tickets. These shall be used to report student misconduct to parents and the school principals.

  18. Students are responsible to the principal for behaviour on the bus and may be subject to discipline, including losing the privilege of riding the bus.
