Background
The Board believes that responsible environmental stewardship should be modeled for students in the division. As well, the Board is committed to providing safe and healthy learning and working environments for students and staff.
Procedures
FOR TEMPERATURES EXCEEDING (ABOVE) +5 CELSIUS
Idle times will not exceed three (3) minutes at any time unless:
- The operation of a wheelchair lift is required
- Eight-way lights are needed in that location for extended durations of loading and unloading.
FOR TEMPERATURES BETWEEN -18 AND +5 CELSIUS
Start Up and Warm Up of Buses
Idling a diesel bus does not significantly increase either engine or inside cabin temperatures.
Idle time should not exceed six (6) to ten (10) minutes at these temperatures.
For buses equipped with a high idle feature, five (5) minutes warm-up time is sufficient to ensure proper engine lubrication.
While Waiting at Schools
Idle time when waiting at schools should not exceed three (3) minutes unless engine operation is required for onboard safety and mobility equipment.
FOR TEMPERATURES BELOW -18 CELSIUS
Start Up and Warm Up of Buses
Idling of buses should not exceed fifteen (15) minutes. Engine operating temperatures should be reached while the bus is in motion.
For buses equipped with a high idle feature, ten (10) to twelve (12) minutes is sufficient time to ensure proper engine lubrication. Further engine heating should take place on-route
While Waiting at Schools
Idle time when waiting at schools should not exceed three (3) minutes unless engine operation is required for onboard safety and mobility equipment.
The Transportation Manager, the Manager of Facilities, along with the Principal at each school will take into account the location of school air intake systems or frequently opened doors when planning bus pickup areas to minimize the chance of exhaust fumes entering school buildings.
