AP-735 — Part-Time Professional Staff

Section Seven: Personnel and Employee Relations
Effective Date: November 2, 2015 Last Reviewed: January 17, 2022

Background

In some circumstances part-time teaching contracts can accommodate both the instructional needs of the school division and the desires of teachers to balance their work lives with other commitments. After considering the staffing needs of the schools, in-school administrators will take into account the convenience of part-time teachers in creating schedules.

Procedures

A. All Teachers on Part-Time Contracts

  1. Attendance at staff meetings is expected. To the degree possible, in-school administrators will schedule meetings at times that accommodate part-time teachers' schedules.

  2. Teachers are expected to attend division-required professional development and conventions for the same percentage of time as their contracts.

  3. If part-time teachers are required to attend more time than indicated by 2. above, they will be paid 1/200th for any such days.

  4. If two teachers are job sharing, they will be expected to work with in-school administrators to ensure that each works the percentage of time assigned, considering the placement of non-student days on the calendar and any difference in the length of mornings and afternoons on the school's daily schedule.

  5. A teacher may be offered a second part-time contract to accommodate a second requirement within the division providing the two contracts do not exceed 1.0 FTE.

  6. A part-time teacher may be employed as a substitute teacher during periods of time when not assigned on his/her contract.

B. Teachers Currently on Continuing Part-Time Contracts

  1. Determination of the percentage of time assigned (contract FTE) will be determined based on the needs of the school as provided under Section 211 of the Education Act.

  2. Notification of the percentage assigned will be provided as soon as possible and by May 31st of the previous school year at the latest.

C. Teachers Currently on Continuing Full Time Contracts

  1. If a teacher desires to reduce his/her FTE from 1.0 to part-time, this could be accommodated through:
    1. A request for a part-time leave. If approved, the percentage and duration of the leave will be specified in writing, as well as the date for return to full time.
    2. A request for a contract change to continuing part-time.
  2. If a teacher currently employed by the division on a continuous full time contract is offered, and accepts, a part-time assignment will be notified in writing of the following:
    1. the F.T.E. for the period of the part-time assignment or the school year, whichever the case may be.
    2. The date on which the teacher returns to full time.
