Background
The Board recognizes that recruiting and hiring teachers is a priority and that hiring excellent teachers ensures optimal learning for all students across the school division. To support this process, Grasslands Public Schools has established a variety of recruiting and hiring incentives.
Hiring Incentives
Grasslands Public Schools offers the following incentives for teachers new to the division.
New teachers can only access one of the incentives listed below to a maximum of 10 months.
If a teacher is rehired on a contract and has not received a full 10 months of the incentive, they are eligible to receive the remaining balance.
These incentives do not apply to substitute teacher positions.
Teachers new to Grasslands Public Schools - $200/month Hiring Incentive Agreement
- Upon the signing of a contract and completion of the new teacher onboarding, a teacher will be eligible to receive a total amount equivalent to $200/month for the length of their contract(s). (Ex. Sept. to June = $2000, January to June = $1200, April to June = $600)
- Total funds will be distributed during the first month of employment provided all onboarding has been completed and processed as a taxable benefit through payroll.
- One tenth will be forgiven each month.
- In the event that employment is terminated by either the employee or employer, the outstanding balance must be repaid to Grasslands Public Schools.
- Individuals may only qualify for this incentive once in their career unless any break of service in excess of five consecutive school years.
Contracted Practicum Students Incentive - $300/month Hiring Incentive Agreement
- In the event that a practicum student in their final year of an eligible education program is signed to a teaching contract and has completed a minimum 9-week practicum with Grasslands Public Schools, they will be eligible for this incentive.
- Upon the signing of a contract and completion of the new teacher onboarding, a teacher will be eligible to receive a total amount equivalent to $300/month for the length of their contract. (Ex. Sept. to June = $3000, January to June = $1800, April to June = $900)
- Total funds will be distributed during the first month of employment provided all onboarding has been completed and processed as a taxable benefit through payroll.
- One tenth will be forgiven each month.
- In the event that employment is terminated by either the employee or employer, the outstanding balance must be repaid to Grasslands Public Schools.
Grasslands Loyalty Incentive – $350/month Hiring Incentive Agreement
- The Division recognizes the value Grasslands' high school graduates or non-certificated employees (ex. EA's, Non-certificated classroom supervisors, librarians, etc.), who become teachers bring with them when they return to the division.
- Upon the signing of a contract and completion of the new teacher onboarding, a teacher will be eligible to receive a total amount equivalent to $350/month for the length of their contract. (Ex. Sept. to June = $3500, January to June = $2100, April to June = $1050)
- Total funds will be distributed during the first month of employment provided all onboarding has been completed and processed as a taxable benefit through payroll.
- One tenth will be forgiven each month.
- In the event that employment is terminated by either the employee or employer, the outstanding balance must be repaid to Grasslands Public Schools.

Grasslands Public Schools offers three categories of hiring incentives for teachers onboarded and contracted on or after December 16, 2024

Eligibility
- New teacher hire or has not worked for the division or for least 5 consecutive school years
- Has not previously collected 10 months of new teacher hire incentive
- Signs a teaching contract and completes onboarding at time of hire
◯ 2. Contracted Practicum Students Incentive
$300/month Hiring Incentive Agreement; max incentive $3,000.00
Eligibility
- Practicum student in their final year of an eligible education program
- Completed a minimum 9-week practicum with Grasslands Public Schools.
- Signs a teaching contract and completes onboarding at time of hire
◯ 3. Grasslands Loyalty Incentive
$350/month Hiring Incentive Agreement; max incentive $3,500.00
Eligibility
- Teacher is a Grasslands' high school graduate or former non-certificated employee
- Signs a teaching contract and completes onboarding at time of hire

- Hiring incentives are fully disbursed commensurate with the duration of contract, once the contract is signed and onboarding is complete.
- All hiring incentives are considered taxable income, therefore income tax, CPP, EI and ATA union dues will be deducted at the time of disbursement.
- Hiring incentives are not pensionable earnings.
- For each month of work that is fulfilled, under contract, one month of the disbursed hiring incentive agreement amount will be forgiven.
- In the event that employment is terminated by either the employee or employer, the outstanding balance that remains unforgiven must be repaid to Grasslands Public Schools.
