Background
Inasmuch as the curriculum for various subjects recommends student field trips, the Board will encourage such trips whenever practical and reasonable.
Guidelines
Field trip budgets and costs are managed at the school level.
It is expected that school councils will be consulted on field trip plans, at least annually.
Procedures (Trips Within Alberta)
Field trips must meet the following conditions to be approved by the principal:
(a) the field trip is within Alberta
(b) the field trip has been well planned and has educational objectives;
(c) students are prepared in advance of a field trip and provisions are made for follow-up activities;
(d) parental approval has been, or will be, obtained for participating students; and
(e) adequate supervision will be provided during the trip;
(f) all guidelines for activities are followed as presented in AP 845 Planning Safe Student Activities
While on a field trip, students are responsible to the supervising teacher, or adult designated by the supervising teacher, for their behaviour and conduct.
Any volunteers accompanying students on a field trip, regardless of role, must be approved as prescribed in AP 760 Volunteers. If volunteer drivers are being used, volunteer driver forms as presented in AP 760 Volunteers must be completed.
The rules which govern the conduct and behaviour of students in a school will apply to students on a field trip.
Principals will develop school procedures for meeting the provisions of the Field Trip procedure and ensure their school practices are consistent with the administrative guidelines.
A complete passenger list for each vehicle used on the field trip will be filed in the principal's office prior to departure and a duplicate kept with each vehicle.
All vehicles / volunteers on a field trip will be provided with emergency contact numbers and contingency plans.
When transportation is required for an approved field trip, the principal, or designate, will complete and return the proper form to the transportation supervisor at least two weeks prior to the trip. If division buses and drivers are available, the Transportation Supervisor will arrange the busing for field trips.
Procedures (Trips Outside of Alberta)
- Approval for a field trip beyond Alberta, including international travel, must be completed by the Board of Education (see Administrative Procedure 860).
