BACKGROUND
The Grasslands School Division covers an area of over 6475 square kilometres in south-eastern Alberta. Brooks, at its centre, is approximately 180 km. southeast of Calgary and 110 km. northwest of Medicine Hat, on Highway No. 1. Lethbridge is 160 km. southwest on Highways 36 and 3. The Division was originally created through the joining of the County of Newell #4 Board of Education and the Brooks School District #2092.
The Division is bordered on the north side by the Red Deer River and on the south by the Bow River.
The communities supporting schools are as follows:
BASSANO, a town 48 km. northwest of Brooks on Highway No. 1, population approximately 1,200. Instruction is offered in Grades Pre-K – 12.
BROOKS, population approximately 14,500. Instruction is offered in Grades Pre-K - 12. Six schools are presently operated in the city of Brooks.
- Eastbrook Elementary School - Grades Pre-K - 6.
- Griffin Park School - Grades Pre-K - 6.
- Uplands School - Grades Pre-K - 6.
- Brooks Junior High School - Grades 7 - 9.
- Sunrise School – Outreach School for Junior and Senior High School students.
- Brooks Composite High School - Grades 10 - 12.
DUCHESS, a village 15 km. north of Brooks on Secondary Road No. 873, population approximately 1,000. Instruction is offered in Grades Pre-K – 12.
GEM, a hamlet 63 km. northwest of Brooks, via Highway No. 36 and Secondary Road 556. Instruction is offered in Grades 1 – 6.
RAINIER, a hamlet 40 km. south of Brooks, just off Highway No. 36. The school is known as Alcoma School. Instruction is offered in Grades Pre-K – 9.
ROLLING HILLS, a hamlet 50 km. southeast of Brooks, on Secondary Road 875, population approximately 260. Instruction is offered in Grades Pre-K – 9.
ROSEMARY, a village 34 km. north northwest of Brooks on Secondary Road 550, population approximately 400. Instruction is offered in Grades Pre-K – 12.
TILLEY, a hamlet 26 km. southeast of Brooks, just south of Highway No. 1, population approximately 350. Instruction is offered in Grades Pre-K – 9.
There are seven Hutterite Colonies that have public schools administered by the division offering education services in Grades 1 - 9. The Colonies are as follows:
BOW CITY, 18 km. west of the junction of Highway 36 and Secondary Road 539, on Secondary Road 539.
CLEARVIEW, 4 km. north and west of Bassano on Highway No. 1, 16 km. north on Range Road 184 (Duck Lake Road) on the east side of the road.
FAIRVILLE, 10 km. north and west of Bassano on Highway No. 1, 3.5 km. north on Granta Road.
LATHOM, 10.5 km. southeast of Bassano on Highway No. 1, 4.8 km. south on Lathom Road, 3.2 km. east on Range Road 200, 9.6 km. south on Range Road 173.
NEWELL, 4 km. north and west of Bassano on Highway No. 1, 16 km. north on Range Road 184 (Duck Lake Road) on the west side of the road.
SPRINGSIDE, 10.8 km. north from Brooks on Highway 544, 14.6 km. east on Highway 544, 13.6 km. north on Highway 876, 3 km. west on Township Road 214.
SPRINGVIEW, 11.3 km. north on Highway 862 from the junction of Highway 556 and Highway 862.
